What is an Australian Labradoodle? To answer your questions, we've attempted to provide (mainly our opinion), some useful advice, information and tips in relation to them. Enjoy!

Warning! Warning

Unless it is your preference, please don't get stuck with a Lab/Poodle cross! Most of these crosses will never look as good as an Australian Labradoodle. 1st & 2nd generation crosses (F1b's, etc..) might look cute as puppies but often grow up looking nothing like you thought. Their coats are often thin and spotty and many just look like scrawny overgrown dogs. Please, don't be fooled and always view the parents to see how the puppies will look when grown.

So what is the differnce between an Australian Labradoodle & these ordinary Labradoodles?

The concept of the Australian Labradoodle was developed for some folks who wanted a service dog that did not cause allergies. The necessary elements of an allergy friendly service dog are temperament, coat quality and health.

It was in the late 1980’s, when Tegan Park and Rutland Manor, the two founders of the Australian Labradoodle, began carefully infusing several other breeds into the early generations of their Labradoodles. The infused breeds include the Irish Water Spaniel, American and English Cocker Spaniels and more recently the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten. The resulting labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other to continue the multi-generation tradition.

That's where our Australian Labradoodles come in. They are descendants of the founding breed and are wonderful, intelligent, intuitive dogs with fabulous coats that are more reliably non-shedding and allergy friendly than standard Lab/Poodle crosses.

Sizes

Three sizes of Labradoodles are currently distinguished.
The Standards are 23 - 24 inches tall.
The Mediums are 18 - 21 inches tall.
The Miniatures are 14 - 17 inches tall.

Weight

The Standards: Females - 23-33 Kgs; Males - 28-39 Kgs.
The Mediums: 20-27 Kgs, Males being the larger.
The Miniatures: 13-27 Kgs, Males being the larger.

Coat

Australian Labradoodles with fleece or wool coats are low to non shedding so they make a great fit for those with pet allergies. The Fleece coat has a distinctly soft fleecy feel unlike any other dog coat. It hangs in loose loopy spirals like that of the Angora goat. The Wool Curly coat resembles that of a poodle and feels like a soft woolly sweater.

Colors

The coats come in a variety of colors including: Black, Silver, Cream, Apricot, Chalk, Gold, Red, Chocolate, and Café.

Life Expectancy

Labradoodles will usually live for about 13 - 15 years.
